Press release

Shaped entirely by the laws of the universe. Harmonious pictures of great beauty. Powerful, cosmic signatures. Comments such as these are often to be heard by people seeing the pictures of Atmani for the first time. Now, works from the Werkstatt Atmani can be viewed for the first time on the international stage: at the “MOCA – Museum of Contemporary Art Beijing”, the most important museum for contemporary art in Asia. Atmani’s works will be shown here from April 26 to June 10 under the title, “Breakthrough to Light”, as part of the “Partnerships” exhibition, a platform for contemporary European and Asian art. Initiator of the exhibition is the Pashmin Art Gallery, Hamburg, which was also responsible for the concept design: “The aim of this project is to build bridges between cultures and open up new perspectives.”

In the works of Atmani, art and science merge in a new and unusual way. The principle underlying the Tone-Circle-Images is music in all its aspects. Nevertheless, the illuminated textile images being shown have by no means been created through aesthetic capriciousness. Rather, they are based on the mathematical laws of interval and harmony and, as such, are unique in the world of visual art. The starting point of the images is “cymatics”, an interdisciplinary research field that investigates the conjunction of tone and material phenomena. A special highlight are the Tone-Circle-Images that Atmani created as a triptych in a visualization of parts of the chorus compositions written by the 52-year-old himself. The themes of the block-prints reflect the male and female poles of the soul. The artistically-executed central image imparts and enhances the two poles.

A novelty: Tone-Circle-Images can be observed as they emerge live on a screen at the Beijing show. In the world premiere on April 26, 2017, a pianist will present the transformation of tones into moving images with the help of a light organ. The light organ is a world novelty that the pianist will play in a musically-creative way. The ever-changing structures react to the finest nuances of the keyboard artist as the room is submerged in iridescent colors. Research into the light organ, once the inspiration for Bauhaus artists, follows in the footsteps of Alexander Scriabin who first introduced the organ in his opera “Prometheus”, a composition combining music, light and colors.
